Milk adulteration should amount to life imprisonment, says Supreme Court

Taking a strong stand against milk adulteration, the Supreme Court of India on Thursday urged that anyone found involved in the illicit activity should be dealt with a firm hand.

Supreme Court for stricter laws for Milk Adulteration. As a countermeasure, the apex court stated that milk adulteration should amount to life imprisonment and asked the government to take all possible measures to prevent it.

A bench comprising of Justice AK Sikri and KS Radhakrishnan took note of growing sales of adulterated milk contaminated with synthetic material in states like West Bengal, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh.

The Apex Court asked the states affected by this problem to make stronger laws capable of dealing with production and sale of milk that is harmful for human beings. The bench also slammed the current maximum punishment of six months by calling it grossly inadequate.

The matter was brought into the court’s notice by a public suit that stated how milk samples collected by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in 2011 revealed the availability of adulterated milk in large scale across the country.
