Centre Approves 10% Reservation for Economically Weaker

January 08, 2019

In an interesting development, the Union Cabinet has prior to General elections approved 10% reservation for economically weaker section in the general category which primarily comprises of upper caste poor. Reportedly, the aforesaid reservation is applicable for those families whose annual income is less than Rs. 8 lakh and hold less than 5 acre of farm land.

What Next?

A proposal to amend Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution will be tabled in the Parliament as the Constitution does not provide for reservation on the grounds of economic backwardness.

This move of Centre just months prior to Lok Sabha Elections is being viewed as an “election gimmick” by the opposition.
