Telecom Secretary: Aadhaar Cards not compulsory for Obtaining Mobile SIMs

May 02, 2018

It has been reported that the Telecom Secretary, Aruna Sundararajan has clarified that submission of Aadhaar card is not a pre-requisite for obtaining Mobile SIMs from telecom operators. Reportedly, the Centre has issued instruction to the Telecom companies to accept alternative identity proofs like voter ID card, passport etc.

This communication from the Telecom Ministry comes in the wake of recent hearing in Aadhaar case, whereby the Supreme Court Constitution Bench had questioned the Centre on Telecom Department’s circular of 2017 which directed Telecom operators to conduct an Aadhaar based re-verification of mobile connections which according to the Telecom Ministry had been issued in view of Supreme Court’s order in the case of Lokniti Foundation v. Union of India. However, Justice Chandrachud while hearing the Aadhaar case on April 25 stated that no such direction had been made by the Supreme Court in the Lokniti case in 2016.
