May 22, 2018

It has been reported that CAIT (Confederation of All India Traders) would move Competition watchdog, CCI against the recent Walmart-Flipkart merger deal. The Walmart has already approached the Competition Commission for its approval that the proposed combination is not anti-competitive and violative of the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002.

The CAIT General Secretary was reported as stating that the important issues related to FDI Policy, cyber security, apprehension of using e-commerce for entering retail trade by circumventing the law are involved in the deal.

The CAIT has also written to the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Sri Suresh Prabhu in this regard. It is apprehended by the CAIT that the merger in question might lead to loss of jobs and an uneven playing field.
