News Flash: Navjot Sidhu Convicted for Murder

BJP MP and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu was on Friday convicted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for causing the death of a Patiala resident following a scuffle in 1989, overturning his acquittal by a lower court.

A division bench comprising Justices Mehtab Singh Gill and Baldev Singh found 43-year-old Sidhu guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and fixed December 6 for pronouncing the quantum of sentence.

Patiala district and session judge had acquitted Sidhu in September 1999 of the charge of causing death to Gurnam Singh following a scuffle. The Punjab government went to the High Court challenging the lower court verdict.

Sidhu has been convicted for causing the death of a Gurnam Singh on December 27, 1988.

Gurnam was beaten up by Sidhu and his associates in a dispute over the parking of vehicles outside the State Bank of Patiala there.

Besides 43-year-old Sidhu, the High Court also convicted his accomplice Bhupinder Singh Sandhu, who too was acquitted by the lower court.

SIDHU Offers to resign

The quantum of the punishment will be decided on Wednesday. Sidhu has sent a letter to BJP President Rajnath Singh offering to resign.

"I have always stood for the truth and will continue to serve the public, will continue to fight for truth," said Sidhu.

It's now up to the party leadership to decide about his resignation.
