TS Thakur to succeed HL Dattu as new Chief Justice of India

Supreme Court of India

The most senior Supreme Court judge, Justice TS Thakur will become the 43rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) to succeed the current Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu, who will retire on 1st Dec 2015.

Under the memorandum of procedure evolved under the collegium system, it is customary and a convention for the outgoing CJI to name the most senior judge as his successor.

The collegium system has been revived after the National Judicial Appointments Commission law was put down by the Constitution bench as unconstitutional. The outgoing CJI has restored the seniority criterion by recommending Justice Thakur for the appointment of next CJI.

According to the sources, President Pranab Mukherjee will issue notification for the appointment of CJI within 10 days after the approval of PM Narendra Modi.

Justice Thakur has rendered various landmark judgements in the last six years of his tenure. He also ordered a CBI probe into the famous multi-crore Sharada scam in the states of Odisha and West Bengal. CBI unearthed a huge scandal in the investigation which involves the names of some high profile personalities in the scam.

In the BCCI case, Justice Thakur prevented the ICC Chairman N. Srinivasan from contesting for the post of BCCI President. Srinivasan was not allowed to participate in the meetings as his company India Cements was the owner of the franchise Chennai Super Kings.
